CARES Species Profile:  Betta simplex

Description

Betta native to Thailand. Found in limestone streams and marshes, including deep pools and faster clear creeks with plants. Feeds on zooplankton and insects. It is a paternal mouthbrooder with the male incubating from 9 to 12 days with 10 days being very consistent. Water conditions are not critical. It should be kept in soft acid water with temperatures in the low 70s F. Pairs can be housed in a 5 gallon tank, while groups should be housed in a 20 gallon tank or larger. Pairs should be given cover such as caves and plants.
