Native to the Rio Lerma and Morelia basins in Mexico, Neotoca bilineata is a livebearer inhabiting streams and springs. It prefers cool to warm, hard, slow-moving water. This is an omnivore with a diet that consists of a balance of plant material and protein. Examples of foods to feed include spirulina algae, blanched vegetables, nori, live baby brine shrimp and freeze-dried daphnia.
