The Balsa Splitfin is native to the Upper Rio Coahuayana and Balsas Basins in Mexico. It is a livebearer inhabiting streams, rivers, and springs with a preference for warm, hard water. it is an omnivore feeding on a mix of algae, detritus, and some invertebrates.
