Native to the Middle Rio Lerma Basin and Lake Zacapu in Mexico, Girardinichthys ireneae is a livebearer inhabiting springs and lakes. It prefers cool to warm, hard, slow-moving water. This is an omnivore with a diet that consists of a balance of plant material and protein. Examples of foods to feed include spirulina algae, blanched vegetables, nori, live baby brine shrimp and freeze-dried daphnia.
