A livebearer native to the Upper Rio Ameca basin in Mexico, Ameca splendens inhabits streams and springs. It prefers warm, hard, slow moving water. This is an omnivore with a diet that consists of plant material and small amounts of protein, leaning more to plant than protein. Examples of foods to feed include spirulina algae, blanched vegetables, nori, live baby brine shrimp and freeze-dried daphnia.
