CARES Species Profile:  Allotoca catarinae

Common Name:  Catarina Allotoca

Description

Native to the Upper Rio Balsas Basin and Rio Catarina drainage in Mexico, Allotoca catarinae is a livebearer inhabiting streams and rivers and it prefers warm, hard water. As herbivores, the diet of all Allotoca species consists of various algae and plant material with minimal animal proteins. The digestive tracks of these fish are longer than some goodeids in order to aide in the digestive process and breakdown of fibrous foods. High fiber foods are necessary in eliminating waste in the intestinal track. It is important not to give high protein foods. Examples of foods to feed are spirulina algae, nori, unsalted French-cut green beans and blanched vegetables. Small amounts of baby brine shrimp can be given but NO bloodworms.
