A female mouthbrooder cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi and the upper Shire River, Champsochromis spilorhynchus is found mainly over sandy and muddy bottoms near vegetation in shallow waters until fully grown when it is observed in deeper plant-free waters. A piscivore, its prey often consists of juvenile Utaka.
